Day Four: Classifying Living Things

Even though animals all need the same things to live and be healthy, animals can look very different and get their needs in very different ways. Explore with your child the ways in which animals can be similar and different!

Step One: Engage Your Student

One way that we can group or "classify" our animals is by the habitat they live in. Below is a short video to engage your child to show different animals and the areas they live around the world.

Step Two: Animal Sorting Activity

  • Below are printable animal cards for your child to sort animals based on their similarities and differences. *If you are unable to print, these could also be drawn by you or your child.*
  • Pick a few cards to start off with and increase the difficulty as required by adding more animals into the mix. Start by asking your child to sort the animals based on where they live.
  • Increase the ways you ask your child to sort their animals. For example try having them sort by:
  1. Number of legs
  2. Pattern on their skin
  3. Wings vs. no wings
  4. Or have your child come up with their own sorting rule!

*Be on the look out for evidence of learning by observing if your child can find ways to sort animals based on their similarities.*
