Day Five: All About Plants

Just like animals, plants have things they need to live. These resources will help your child learn about what plants need to grow and be healthy.

Step One: Engage Your Child

  • Video One: Peep Plants a Seed. This video is a fun and engaging way to teach your child about how plants grow out of seeds and the needs that a plant requires to grow and live. After watching the video ask your child what they think a plant needs to live. Be on the lookout for:
  1. Soil (or dirt)
  2. Water
  3. Sunlight
  4. Air
  • Video Two: Parts of a Plant: This is a quick video to help your child learn about the different parts of a plant.

Step Two: Plant Diagram Activity

Now that your child has learned about the needs of a plant and its parts, it's time to practise putting together what they know. The art activity below is an example of a plant diagram that you and your child can do to build a plant part by part and add in the things it needs to live. To take it a step further have your child label the diagram using the plant vocabulary. This example was created using construction paper, but this could also be done by drawing and colouring, or even computer programs!

*Be on the lookout for signs of learning by observing your child to see if they can put the parts of the plant where they go and label their parts. Have conversations and question your child to see if they understand that the plant needs sunlight, water, air, and soil. *

Extending the Learning: If you have access to seeds or plants in your home, a great learning experience for your child would be to have them plant a seed and document its growth and care over time. Below is a plant journal which can be printed out to help your child keep track of their plants progress.
