Day Six: Keeping the Environment Clean

In order to keep the living things in our world safe it is important that we practise ways to keep the  their space clean. Help your child learn about why it is important to keep our environment healthy and ways that they can contribute.

Step One: Engage Your Child

  • Listen to this adapted read aloud book called "Seagull" by Danny Snell, a story about a seagull who becomes trapped in some beach trash on her beloved beach, to help show your child why it is so important for us as humans to keep the environment clean.
  • After the reading engage in discussion with your child about ways that we can help contribute to a healthy environment. Examples include: recycling, saving energy, re-using all materials possible.
  • Ask your child what could have been done to prevent Seagull from being trapped on the beach? Recycling!

Step Two: Learning to Recycling

  • Take a trip into the kitchen to find your trash, recyclables, and waste. Show your child what goes into each bin. The labels below can be printed and placed on bins to help your child through the sorting process.
  • Give your child their own collection of items to dispose of. *Be on the lookout for signs of learning by observing if they can find the proper spots!*
